What exactly is Ubiquiti Networks UniFi?
What is UBNT UniFi?
UBNT UniFi is an ecosystem comprising wireless access points, routers, switches, security cameras, controller devices, VoIP phones, and access control solutions. It exists between companies and low-cost home networking equipment. UniFi network equipment is handled by the UniFi network controller, which is a solid middle ground, allowing more flexibility and features than AmpliFi. Using a standard UniFi network, you can select the necessary components and multiples of them.
Common UniFi Network Topologies
You can mix UniFi and third-party networking devices, but a full UBNT UniFi topology managed by the UniFi Network Controller provides centralized network management with all of the sophisticated UniFi features.
A common architecture that includes a UniFi Security Gateway, Switch, Access Point, and Cloud Key will look like this:
Using the integrated UniFi Dream Machine, a similar topology (covering gateway, switch and access point) would look something like this diagram:
A UniFi Dream Machine Pro system, with both UniFi Network and UniFi Protect controllers, might look like this if you want to power your cameras and access points via PoE:
Benefits of UniFi Network
Deployment Ease
Having a controller in the cloud (such as Servant Design’s cloud-hosted UniFi Controller) allows for incredibly simple hardware deployment. In every scenario where we have a UniFi Security Gateway (router/ACL firewall) installed, any new UniFi equipment linked to the network is instantaneously identified by the controller and accessible for adoption. When the Controller adopts the device, it immediately receives the necessary configuration for the device type and is ready in minutes.
Performance Cost
UniFi devices are appropriate for most small businesses and even some medium-sized enterprises because they do not require the added cost of purchasing high-priced items such as Cisco corporate equipment. Customers can achieve some of the same results with Ubiquiti products. Many items are advanced enterprise hardware that most people do not require, therefore Ubiquiti makes sense for smaller organizations that require enterprise-grade equipment.
Total Visibility
UniFi Controller can provide useful insights into how your network is being utilized and what improvements would benefit network performance and efficiency. For example, since installing Wi-Fi at a local church and adding user phones to the network, on any given Sunday morning, there are more than 60 devices linked to one access point in the sanctuary, which also happens to be connected to the same switch from which the church live broadcasts.
Longevity
UniFi products are designed to be remotely operated, and they are constantly updated with new features that were not accessible when they were first released! Consider the following example. For example, the UniFi Security Gateway Pro 4 (the rack-mounted version of the original USG) now has just two LAN ports (RJ45), two WAN ports (RJ45), and two additional SFP WAN ports. Would it be wonderful to be able to use these two SFP ports for optical fiber or stack copper wires to downstream switches?
