Tips before installing CCTV Security Systems in Kenya

There are many different types of CCTV security systems to choose from when it comes to securing your business in Kenya. Security cameras are extremely important in today’s society, and with cameras all around us, our daily lives are becoming increasingly secure.

Many people are unaware that there are various types of CCTV security systems that are suitable for different situations or premises, and that selecting the right surveillance camera for the right application is critical. Installing an IP security camera system, especially for a large home or business, can be a daunting and time-consuming task.

There are several factors to consider, including how many cameras (indoors and outdoors) will be installed, where the security cameras will be mounted, how and where the cables will be run/snaked, whether to use pipe or not and so on.

So, before you start drilling holes and mounting cameras, review this list of helpful IP security camera installation tips to avoid potential pitfalls and get the most out of your video surveillance system.

Don’t use low-cost Cat5e/Cat6 cable. Purchase from a reputable company (for example Siemon, Giganet, Easenet, or Cisco). If the cable will be exposed to the elements, choose outdoor-rated cable. The same is true if the cable will be buried.

Cable runs should not exceed 300 feet for optimal performance and reliability of an IP camera system (91 meters).

Match UTP-connected devices (modular plugs, couplers, and wall plates) to the cable category used throughout the installation.

Cat5e and Cat6 cable bend radius should be no more than four times the cable diameter (no less than an inch).

The cable’s excess length should be kept to a minimum so that it can be easily pushed back into the wall cavity. Before stripping the sheath from the cable in a wall box, it is best to determine the proper amount of excess cable.

Avoid using staples when mounting Cat5e or Cat6 cables (if you have no other option, stable the cable carefully). Use D rings, bridle rings, J hooks, or other devices that will not damage or alter the cable’s outer form.

Parallel distances between high-voltage wires (120/240VAC) and Cat-5e/6 cables should be kept between 6 and 10 inches.

When connecting Cat5e and Cat6 cables to devices, don’t strip them too much. Use as little length as possible. It will look nice this way.

Do not combine T568A and T568B wiring schemes when terminating the cables. Only use one connection format throughout the installation/project because data signals will not transfer if the wires do not match.

Use only high-quality cat5e/cat6 jacks. Label the cable runs on both ends. It is also a good idea to label each camera (on the pigtail). When installing Cat5e or Cat6 cables, do not allow the pull tension to exceed 25 pounds.

Configure the cameras before installing them if you’re using external PoE switches. For example, setting the IP address, getaway, username, or password. Contact Rapidtech Digital Solutions today for more details before we proceed to the CCTV installation at your home or office.
